Established in 2003, BuiltGreen Canada is a certification program for homes that are environmentally responsible. The BuiltGreen™ name adds value to your home by promoting the use of practices and products that represent resource-efficient and environmentally friendly construction.
The purpose of BuiltGreen Canada is to encourage homebuilders to prioritize energy efficiency, provide healthier indoor air, preserve natural resources, and improve your home's durability. As a result, a BuiltGreen™ provides you with a healthier more comfortable home that helps to significantly reduce your impact on the environment.
BuiltGreen is a voluntary program and holds its members to a high level of environmental stewardship. Training is essential. All builder and renovator members must be trained in BuiltGreen™ practices, policies and procedures prior to building their BuiltGreen™ projects. Training and education for new members is based on five main areas of focus:
- Environmental concern
- Increased energy efficiency and reduced pollution
- Healthier indoor air
- Reduction in water usage
- Preservation of natural resources
- Improved home durability and reduction in maintenance
You may be thinking - this sounds like a great idea but how much will it cost? Built Green is designed to be flexible and affordable. The nation-wide program offers four different levels of building that allow builders, renovators and consumers to make the best choice for their budgets.
To maintain its high standards BuiltGreen believes that third party certification is critical. BuiltGreen Canada conducts regular reviews of each builder and renovator to ensure that they are maintaining the integrity of the program. If builders and/or renovators do not comply with BuiltGreen's standards, corrective action is taken in terms of training and coaching.
When choosing your next construction or renovation contractor look for the BuiltGreen™ certification logo, inquire if they are they are involved in the program, or look for them on the BuiltGreen™ website.
